Hispanic Heritage Sister Spotlight: Flormaria Toulson
Hello Powerful UFCW Family!
Last week, I had the opportunity to chat with one of our powerful Women’s Network Executive board members, Diversity co-chair, Flormaria Toulson. I truly appreciated her story and found wisdom in her words. It feels right to spotlight them during this month dedicated to Hispanic Heritage.
Our sister Flo grew up immersed in stories from her parents about their immigration from the Dominican Republic. It was instilled in her at an early age to see and value all people in every role, no matter their title. Flo followed in her mom and Sisters’ footsteps to not only rise above but also bring other women with you.
Since her UFCW journey began in 2012 at Local 888, her curiosity and hard work ethic have led her to become a Region 1 coordinator for the UFCW Women’s Network and subsequently, the Co-Chair of Diversity for the Women’s Network International. In this role, she is doing what her mother taught her to do, “Roll up your sleeves and do what needs to get done!” Teaching others to “stand ten toes down in their power” is her mission, and with gratitude at the unending encouragement of Max Bruny, President, Local 888, Flo has never had to wonder if she has support! Steering with power, Region 1 held a spectacular event!
Region 1’s Childcare Grant Fundraiser gives a voice to the unsung heroes in our communities, hardworking families! The childcare grant was founded by Rhonda Nelson, UFCW Women’s Network Emeritus Chair. Building from last year’s luncheon, this year’s event grew to a gala featuring “Women in Labor”. This year’s honorees were the three trailblazers: Lisa Pedersen, LaQuita Honeysucker and Rosalba Perez. They are dedicated to lifting women and advancing the rights for all workers. The event raised over $24,000 with the help of generous sponsors, Region 1 coordinators and board members.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor and celebrate the achievements of Latinx communities. It is the work and leadership of sisters like Flo who inspire us all to do what needs to be done! I am filled with a renewed sense of hope by Flo’s response to vicious attacks on immigrants and children: “It is not the first time, and it won’t be the last. But I know this is not where we are going to stay. If each one teaches one, we will continue to move forward.”
Join me this month in rolling up our sleeves to do what needs to get done! Together, we can stand in POWER.
In Solidarity,
Deliana Speights
International Chair, UFCW Women’s Network
