Especially in the current political climate, we want every member to know that their union is a safe and supportive space where help is always available.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

  • Designate an emergency contact person.

  • Identify an immigration lawyer ahead of time and keep their number or card with you.

  • Obtain a KYR card & Do not carry any false or foreign documents.

  • Identify local organizations that can help you (legal aid, churches, worker centers).

  • Collect important documents for children: passports, birth certificates, SSN

    • Have your documents organized and in a safe place: passports, ID’s attorney contact info, all financial records, letters from immigration, A#’s.

  • Identify at least two willing caregivers who can serve as temporary guardians for your minor children.

  • Consider establishing a power of attorney or caregiver authorization affidavit for a designated caregiver or guardian.

  • Prepare financial records, bank statements, credit cards, transfer of assets if needed.

Find the Right Attorney

  • You have the right to an immigration attorney at your own cost. You can find an immigration attorney via AILA’s Immigration Lawyer Search or find a public defender –only if related to criminal charges.

  • Even if you are not thinking about starting an immigration process, meeting with a lawyer and getting legal screening is important to find out if there are any options for adjusting immigration status and choosing the right lawyer is crucial.

  • How to Find an Immigration Lawyer.

  • Find a Local affiliate agency (nonprofit organization) that provides authorized immigration legal representation from attorneys and/or Department of Justice (DOJ)accredited representatives at the partial or full level.

Find Detained Family Members

  • A detained person will be assigned an A number (A-XXX-XXX-XXX). Family members can use this number to locate and track their loved ones via the Online Detainee Locator System

  • You may call ICE’s national phone number at 1-855-448-6903 or call the regional office contact (Mon –Fri 8am -8pm ET.)

  • Last, you may reach to your consulate. They receive reports of all their nationals who have been detained.
